Recognition of existing qualifications, knowledge and skills
KIT full-time and part-time courses are competency based and students are competent when they can demonstrate the knowledge and skills to successfully complete work activities in a range of situations and environments, to the standard expected in the workplace. Both on and off the job training and assessment aim to make graduates work ready. Assessment involves collecting evidence. This evidence may be direct evidence (such as observation of workplace performance), indirect evidence (such as formal testing) or supplementary evidence (such as references from employers). KIT benchmarks assessment internationally to ensure students and employers benefit from the highest standards. KIT makes the initial assessment judgement and then engages with selected sub-contracted Australian Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to act as the final assessor. All assessment evidence is verified by the RTO and a competency-based skills recognition assessment is conducted. KIT students assessed as competent are awarded recognition of prior learning (RPL). This means that students have successfully completed the unit and have the necessary skills, knowledge and attributes for the relevant industry. KIT students who have completed a full-time or part-time course are eligible to be awarded an Australian qualification from the Australian RTO.
Regionally recognised Training Provider
On 1 June, 2018, KIT was granted accreditation as a provider of higher education and training for a period of five years under the Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) of The Pacific Community (SPC). KIT’s accreditation was successfully renewed on 30 September, 2023. Accreditation means that KIT meets the Pacific Quality Assurance Framework (PQAF) standards and guidelines for institutions and their programmes. The PQAF standards and guidelines were developed and informed by international best practice. By granting accreditation to KIT, EQAP acknowledges the rigour of KIT’s quality assurance policies and processes and administration. This instils student and employer confidence in KIT graduates. KIT is committed to inclusion for all and is building learning and employment pathways for disadvantaged groups of I-Kiribati. KIT has submitted three Certificate I level courses for accreditation through EQAP. KIT’s Certificate I level courses provide a pathway to KIT’s Certificate II level courses which are assessed at KIT and in conjunction with Australian RTOs. The Certificate I level programs also have a work focus with pathways to national and international employment.
