'Te Katiteuanaaki' Kiribati for Inclusion
Skills Week: gaining international qualifications Kiribati Institute of Technology held their inaugural Skills Week from 22 to 30 October 2019. The purpose of Skills Week is to gain Recognition of Prior Learning for students who have successfully completed all assessments in Certificate II in Electrotechnology, Certificate II in Plumbing and Certificate II in Hospitality. Kiribati Institute of Technology delivers Technical and Vocational Education and Training to students undertaking a range of trade and non-trade courses, and seeks Australian accreditation through Recognition of Prior Learning in collaboration with Australian Registered Training Organisations. The Recognition of Prior Learning process is part of the innovative Developmental Recognition of Prior Learning Model, devised and implemented at Kiribati Institute of Technology through the Kiribati Facility, supported by the Australian Government. Short Term Advisers (Recognition of Prior Learning assessors) travel to Kiribati to conduct skills observations and conversational interviews, enabling Kiribati Institute of Technology graduates to demonstrate the skills and knowledge in their respective vocational fields, and gain an Australian awarded qualification. Students showcased their electrical, plumbing, and hospitality skills through organised activities for Recognition of Prior Learning assessments, completed over the course of seven days on campus. The Kiribati Institute of Technology hospitality program is delivered in partnership with Marine Training Centre. Skills Week activities were conducted at both Marine Training Centre and Kiribati Institute of Technology campuses. The Skills Week assessments provide an opportunity to showcase high quality training outcomes for graduates. Recognition of Prior Learning gained during Skills Week provides graduates with an internationally recognised Australian qualification, and opens up employment pathways into domestic and international labour markets. This includes labour mobility programs such as the Pacific Labour Scheme. Certificate II in Electrotechnology student being assessed for Recognition of Prior Learning. Certificate II in Hospitality students at Marine Training Centre. Certificate II in Plumbing students in the workshop. 11
